Writing Celebration!

We wrapped up our non-fiction unit on Friday by celebrating with Mrs. Kuieck’s class. Your children have worked on writing introductions, teaching chapters, diagrams, different kinds of pages, how-to pages, conclusions, glossaries and text features. We have worked on editing by checking for capital letters for names and beginning of sentences, proper punctuation, reading carefully so our sentences make sense, and using our Quick Words to check our spelling. Our next unit is Realistic Fiction!

Non-Fiction in the Sun!

We took advantage of the beautiful weather today to take our non-fiction books outside! These readers have been practicing with non-fiction books to learn and share new facts with friends. They have learned the different text features: headings, table of contents, captions, diagrams… and have learned how to “prove” what they learned by showing a friend where they found the information. We practice skimming and scanning today. The kids learned how to look for certain things on a page before they read it to give them a better idea about the information they would be reading.

Non Fiction Reading!

It is amazing to see our second graders venture into nonfiction reading and use strategies to help  them understand what they are reading/learning.   We have learned to talk “A LOT” and read “A LITTLE”.   Good non fiction readers also ask themselves questions, search out answers in other texts and share what they know.   Book clubs have studied a variety of topics including dinosaurs, dolphins, insects and many more.   This week, book club members are working on making posters and presenting their learnings in a meaningful way to their classmates to teach what they have learned! 🙂
